Zaaksysteem.nl was an open source (EUPL) case-oriented work platform used by municipalities and semi-government organisations across the Netherlands. It handles everything from citizen requests and permits to internal workflows. The kind of system an entire local government runs on daily. It is currenly known as xxllnce Zaakgericht.

As backend, frontend and devops engineer for over ten years building and maintaining Zaaksysteem. This includes major architectural decisions and critical infrastructure. Highlights include:

• Co-authoring the eIDAS authentication integration
• Secure passwordless logins for employees
• Building multi-tenant support so a single instance could serve multiple tenants
• and leading a year-long refactoring effort that replaced a flawed storage layer with optimized database functions.

During the COVID crisis, municipalities were overwhelmed with case registrations. The bottleneck was identified and a fix delivered that reduced registration time from over four seconds to 200 milliseconds. Developed, tested and deployed within eight hours.
